Bauchi road crash claims 18 lives, 2 injured

BauchiNOT fewer than 18 persons have been confirmed dead while two others were seriously injured in a ghastly lone motor accident involving a Hilux Pickup vehicle in Yautare village of Darazo local government area of Bauchi State which was said to be conveying traders to Dukku in Gombe State for business.

While confirming the accident to our Correspondent on Friday, Bauchi State Sector Command of the FRSC Head of Operations, Mr Paul Gua, said that the Hilux Pickup van with registration number: DRZ 716 XA had a tyre-bust while on top speed which resulted into the accident.

He further stated that twenty adult males were in the vehicle when the accident happened at around 12.30 pm, saying that 16 persons died on the spot while two other persons later died at the Federal Medical Centre in Azare while receiving treatment.

Paul Gua said that: “The commercial vehicle which was conveying twenty passengers to a market skipped off the road and lost control as a result of the tyre that burst. The vehicle ran into the bush and started hitting trees and rocks. In the process, many of the victims lost their lives and sustained fatal injuries.”

“The other two persons are at a very critical condition. They were transferred from Federal Medical Centre, Azare to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital Bauchi, where they are currently receiving treatment,” he further said.

The FRSC Head of Operations also said that the corpses of the deceased persons had been deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre, Azare while the vehicle had been evacuated by the officers of the Command.

He then advised motorists especially commercial drivers to always ensure that they used new tyres in their vehicles and maintain the minimum speed limit in order to minimize fatalities when accidents occur.
