The African Union (AU) has extended invitations to South Africa and Nigeria to host the upcoming editions of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA).
The invitations cover the 2025 and 2026 editions, sparking excitement and debate within the African music community.
The AU’s letter, signed by Ambassador Minata Samate Cessouma, the Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development, emphasizes the strategic importance of hosting AFRIMA.
This aligns with AU Agenda 2063 and the Charter for African Cultural Renaissance, which aim to promote Africa’s musical talents and cultural heritage.
“AFRIMA is a significant global platform celebrating Africa’s diverse musical talents. Hosting the event offers substantial opportunities for the selected country,” the letter states.
AFRIMA has been a successful collaboration with the AU since 2014, featuring music awards, festivals, talent discovery, and advocacy.
The last AFRIMA edition was held in Dakar, Senegal. South Africa and Nigeria, known for their successful past hosting of AFRIMA, are now both considered for the prestigious role.
AFRIMA’s Country Director, Lekunutu Seboko, expressed South Africa’s enthusiasm, citing the country’s rich musical heritage and modern infrastructure as key assets.
“We are excited about the opportunity to host AFRIMA. South Africa’s state-of-the-art venues and vibrant cultural scene would provide a dynamic backdrop for the awards,” Seboko said.
AFRIMA’s Director of Sponsorship and Partnership, Matlou Tsotetsi, highlighted the potential economic and cultural benefits, including increased tourism and investment in the creative industries.

Angela Martins, Acting Director for Social Development, Culture, and Sports Division at the African Union Commission, confirmed the invitations and underscored AFRIMA’s role in cultural exchange and economic development.
She urged both countries to leverage this opportunity for enhancing intra-African collaboration and international visibility.
Additionally, the Moroccan government has shown interest in potentially hosting AFRIMA-related events to coincide with the Africa Cup of Nations from December 2025 to January 2026.
The AU is committed to supporting the selected host country to maximize the impact of AFRIMA on the music industry, tourism, and economic growth.
