The immediate past Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has stated that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar deserves more recognition for his contributions to economic policymaking under the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
El-Rufai said this during a condolence visit alongside Atiku to the family of the late Chief Edwin Clark following his passing on 17 February 2025 at the age of 97.
Speaking during the visit, El-Rufai argued that Atiku deserves credit for leading economic reforms during the Obasanjo administration.
According to him, people only remember negative things and tend to forget the positive ones, which is why the former Vice President is not getting the credit he deserves.
He described the opportunity to visit the late elder statesman’s family together with Atiku as an honour.
El-Rufai also enjoined the family of the late Clark to continue his legacy of promoting a united Nigeria, saying that was what the late elder statesman was known for during his lifetime.

He said, “Nobody gives Vice President Atiku Abubakar the credit for leading economic policymaking under the Obasanjo administration. Many of the things we did, we did under his leadership.
“Maybe because we don’t write a lot, and people don’t read history. We tend to forget; we only remember negative things. I think it is part of human nature to remember only negative things and forget positive things.
“I am honored, I am humbled to come with Vice President Atiku Abubakar to condole with Chief Edwin Clerk’s family and commend the work that he has done. And I call on you as a family to please continue his good work. The most important part of that good work is to do what he has always been known for: one Nigeria, one country.“
