Armed robbers attacked a Federal Road Safety Officer, simply identified as Abu, who was coming from a bank and heading towards his house at Zango in Lokoja, Kogi state.
The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the robbery, stating that N139,000 was recovered from the scene. The officer was rushed to the hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.
The officer was dispossessed of the money after being shot multiple times on Friday.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the armed robbers trailed the officer, who was riding a motorcycle, from the bank to Phase One, Lokongoma, right in front of Lokongoma market.
He was double-crossed by the armed robbers, who then started dragging the cross bag containing a large sum of money with him. During the struggle, they shot him three times in both legs and the shoulder.
According to Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Aya, the incident happened “at exactly 1:30 pm.” Officers received a distress call and rushed to the scene at Lokongoma, Phase One in Lokoja, where they found Abu in a pool of blood, having been shot in both legs and the shoulder.
He added, “He was coming from the bank when a Toyota Camry Ash color car accosted him and blocked him right in front of Lokongoma market, Phase 1 in Lokoja, and was dispossessed of an unspecified sum of money.”
SP William Aya stated that N139,000 was recovered at the scene, while the victim was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
He also mentioned that the Police Commissioner, Bertrand Onuoha, has deployed officers to the scene to ensure the safety of lives and property and to track the armed robbers with a view to bringing them to justice.
