In a historic moment for the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Awka branch, Engr. Mrs. Oluchi Maryjane Okoli has been elected as the first female Chairman in the branch’s 33-year history.
The election took place shortly after the Society’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Gelly’s Garden Conference Hall in Awka on Saturday.
The new executive members elected alongside Mrs. Okoli include:
Vice Chairman: Engr. Dr. Ogochukwu Martins
General Secretary: Chioma Stella Chiegbuka
Assistant General Secretary: Engr. Ugbu Laurence Ikechukwu
Financial Secretary: Engr. Mba Chinedu Gabriel
Treasurer: Engr. Sunday Nzekwe
Technical Secretary: Engr. Onwura Faith
Assistant Technical Secretary: Engr. Ubah Joseph Ikenna
Public Relations Officer: Engr. Okoro Arinzechukwu
Ex-Official Member One: Engr. David Okeke
Ex-Official Member Two: Engr. Victor Emeka
In her congratulatory speech, the National President of NSE, Engr. Mrs. Margaret Oguntala, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Anambra State Ministry of Youth Development, Engr. Dr. Martins Agbili, encouraged the new leadership to pursue an inclusive administration. She praised Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo for providing a conducive environment for the election.
Outgoing Chairman Engr. David Okeke expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the election and commended his team for their support throughout his tenure. He assured the new leadership of his continued support to advance the branch.
In her acceptance speech, Mrs. Okoli thanked God and the branch members for their support, especially her male counterparts.
She highlighted that the Awka branch was established in 1991, shortly after the state was created, and appealed to her co-contenders, particularly Engr. Chidi Obiodo, for their support in improving the NSE in Anambra State and Nigeria.
The newly elected leadership is expected to serve for a term of two years.
