‘Africa can benefit from $739bn halal industry’

THE Deputy Director of Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security, Universiti, Putra, Malaysia, Dr Awis Sazili, has projected the global halal food market size to reach $739.59 billion by 2025.

Africa, he said, could take advantage of the galal industry for economic development.

Sazili spoke at the Nigeria halal industry virtual symposium organised by the Halal Compliance and Food Safety (HaCFoS) attended by participants from different countries including Malaysia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand.

Chairman of HaCFoS, Professor Luqman Zakariyah, said the industry’s aim was to ensure that Nigerians live a healthy lifestyle and make them aware of the benefits inherent in investing in the Industry.

Director-General, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Farouk Salim, who commended the organisers, said SON was ready to engage a diverse range of stakeholders and develop a standard for halal products to initiate regulatory impact assessment.

Represented by the Public Relations Officer, Rilwan Fashina, Salim said SON would develop halal sector and intensify value-added activity in the industry.

Director, Jaiz International Halal Certification, Dr Abdullahi Shuaib, bemoaned Nigerian Muslims’ inability to take advantage of the industry compared to Muslim-minority nations like Australia and New Zealand.

Dr Shuaib urged Islamic organisations to educate their members on halal products.

Chief Executive Officer of HaCFoS, Dr Monsur Salisu, promised that the company would continue to create awareness and strengthen its operation to ensure that the country’s halal industry is given adequate attention and ensure best practices.

This, he said, would ensure that the country benefits from the global halal industry.
