The Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO), UK South has described achieving diaspora voting as one of its topmost priorities in 2024.
The chairman of the organisation, Niyi Zacheaus, in a New Year message released and made available to Tribune Online, explained that the group will work with government and all stakeholders to ensure it is achieved.
According to him, ensuring Nigerians abroad have rights to participate in the voting process in every election cycle will build trust among Nigerians in the Diaspora and the government of the day.
“I must mention that achieving Diaspora voting is one of our priorities in 2024. As this will build trust among Nigerians in the Diaspora and the government of the day in order to provide a deep sense of belonging that will further encourage citizens abroad to participate in Nigerian affairs. We shall therefore work with the government and all stakeholders to achieve this,” he said.
Speaking further, Mr Zacheaus noted that the organisation’s primary goals in 2024 is to strengthen bonds between Nigerians at home and abroad, and create a platform for engagement, collaboration and knowledge exchange.
He said this partnership can bridge gaps for the country in various sectors.
“I’ve no doubt that we, as diasporans, are more determined this year to work with all stakeholders. The federal government of Nigeria, Nigeria in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) and all NIDO chapters across the world, to ensure the policies and the new agenda of the government result in positive changes to our homeland.
“As we enter this new year, we are presented with prime opportunities to reflect upon our accomplishments, confront the challenges that lie ahead, and chart a course for a brighter future for Nigeria.
“As members of the Diaspora, we possess unique perspectives, valuable skills and a deep love for our country. It is our collective responsibility to channel this strength towards promoting sustainable developments, foistering progress and uplifting our fellow Nigerians.
One of our primary goals this year should be to strengthen the bond between Nigerians in the Diaspora and our motherland. We must create a platform for engagement, collaboration and knowledge exchange to leverage the expertise and resources available within our global community. By fostering partnership between Nigerians at home and abroad, we can bridge the gaps in various sectors and contribute meaningfully to development of our homeland,” Mr. Zacheaus stated.
Continuing, he disclosed that the organisation is poised to promote investment and economic empowerment, adding that the diaspora community hold immense potential to drive economic growth in Nigeria.
The statement reads in part: “Let us encourage and facilitate Diaspora investment, entrepreneurship and innovations by providing guidance, access to networks and financial support.
“Through targeted programmes and initiatives, we can create a conducive environment for Diaspora-led businesses and contribute to job creation and economic development in Nigeria.
“Furthermore, we must collaborate with institutions to improve the quality of education, healthcare and infrastructure in our country. We can support educational initiatives, scholarship programmes and capacity building projects to ensure that every Nigerian has access to quality education and opportunities for personal growth.
“By advocating for improved healthcare infrastructure, we can contribute to the wellbeing and overall health of our fellow citizens. Similarly, by investing in sustainable infrastructure projects, we can enhance connectivity, create employment opportunities and facilitate economic growth.
“Additionally, we must recognise the importance of social and cultural development in our homeland. We should strive to preserve our rich cultural heritage, promote cultural exchanges and celebrate our diversity. Through cultural events, arts, programmes and cultural exchange initiatives, we can foster a deeper cultural appreciation for our unique Nigerian identity while promoting unity and harmony among all Nigerians both at home and abroad.
“Furthermore, I must mention that achieving Diaspora voting is one of our priorities in 2024. As this will build trust among Nigerians in the Diaspora and the government of the day in order to provide a deep sense of belonging that will further encourage citizens abroad to participate in Nigerian affairs. We shall therefore work with the government and all stakeholders to achieve this.
“Finally, let us remember that our commitment to our homeland does not end at our borders. As Nigerians in the Diaspora, we have the global responsibilities to serve as ambassadors of our country, promoting its interest, values and achievements on the international stage. We must actively participate in diplomacy, advocate for Nigeria’s priorities and contribute to global discussions and decision-making processes that impact our country and the world at large.”
