In its efforts to further improve the economy of Aba, the Abia State Government, on Tuesday, signed a Memorandum of Understanding, (MoU) with Total Value Integrated Services Ltd, (TVISL), for the development of N30million Leather/garment Cluster in Umunnator in Obingwa Local Government Area, near Aba.
According to the Permanent Secretary, state Ministry of Industries and Chief host of the occasion, Rev. Engr. Cletus Mbah “Gov. Ikpeazu in his wisdom wants to make artisans excel and is in love with them,” hence the need to build a cluster for them.
“Ikpeazu’s thinking is for them to do business in a cluster that affords them an address and not on the streets” and called for prayers for the governor so that before 2023, the cluster will be commissioned.”
Explaining the concept to the state government during the occasion, the Chief Executive Officer of TVISL, Dr Chris Onyekachi Simon, said that the project which is under Public Private Partnership, (PPP), would consist of 15,000 shops with banks, security posts, free internet, steady power supply and other infrastructure to make business easy for the shop owners.
He further explained that payment for the shops would be “flexible and spread across four years on a weekly or monthly payment basis and not a situation where money bags will take over the shops for themselves.”
He assured that the state Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu would commission the project before leaving office in 2023 and appealed to the traders to take advantage of the easy payment method to acquire shops.
In his speech, the host traditional ruler and Nwachinemereze I of Ahiaba Mbu Autonomous Community in Umunneator of Obingwa Local Government Area, HRH Eze Okechukwu Okwandu assured of peaceful environment for the cluster to exist.
In their separate speeches, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Mrs Ijeoma Okere, the union Chairman of Tailors and Fashion Designers Union, Chief Geoffrey Adiele, as well as Leather Products Manufacturers Association, Okechukwu Williams, thanked the governor for seeing the need for the cluster, expressing their excitement that it was coming at their time.
They pleaded with the contractor to ensure a quality job is done and urged the governor to do more.
