TERTIARY institutions in Nigeria would have become comatose, but for the monitoring processes by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and professional bodies such as the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
The vice chancellor of the Ekiti State University (EKSU), Professor Samuel Oye Bandele, made the remark during a visit to his office by the COREN accreditation team led by Mr Reuben Okeke.
The COREN team had been on accreditation visit to the Department of Computer Engineering in the Faculty of Education of the university.
Professor Bandele said the NUC and COREN should be appreciated by all and sundry for their roles in improving standards in Nigerian universities. He commended the COREN team and promised that all the observations they made in their report would be addressed.
He also promised to provide facilities for the engineering department to make it one of the best in Nigerian universities.
Earlier, the leader of the team, Okeke, explained that they were in the university to conduct an impartial assessment of the department.
The visit, he said, included looking at the syllabus, the curriculum, staff and student ratio. He then expressed appreciation for the co-operation the team received from the university, staff and students of the department.
