The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano State Command, has deployed 1,539 personnel to ensure effective traffic management throughout the festive season and New Year celebration in the state.
This was just as the state police command has said that the use of fireworks is completely banned, adding that “Any group or individual is warned to desist from any act or conduct that will likely cause a breach of peace or breakdown of law and order.”
The State FRSC Sector Commander, Umar Matazu, disclosed this in a statement issued by the Command Public Relations Officer (PRO), Abdullahi Labaran, on Sunday in Kano.
According to the statement, “The command deployed five ambulances, 25 patrol vehicles, and one heavy-duty towing truck, among other operational equipment.”
He said that “the operation is to clear obstructions on highways in the state with a target of zero fatalities during the celebration.
“This year’s end-of-year and new-year special patrol operation is tagged ‘Operation Zero Tolerance to Road Traffic Crashes’ and is aimed at ensuring safe road use throughout the festive season.”
He emphasised that eight unit commands, outposts, Zebra, and roadside clinics along Kano-Zaria road will work round the clock to ensure the safety of lives and properties on the highway.
Matazu said all station officers in the 44 local government areas of the state are fully involved in the operations.
“Out of the 1,539 personnel, 1,303 Regular Marshals and 236 Special Marshals were deployed on six major routes to ensure safe and smooth vehicular movement, traffic control, and prompt attention to victims of road traffic crashes during the period.”
The Sector Commander called on road users to prioritise safety by adhering to traffic regulations and avoiding reckless behaviours that jeopardise lives.
He advised motorists to plan their journeys in advance, avoid night travels, and report emergencies to the FRSC toll-free line 122 or visit the nearest FRSC office for assistance.
Matazu also wished all road users a joyous Christmas and a prosperous New Year and encouraged the public to collaborate with the FRSC to achieve an accident-free festive season.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mr Salman Dogo Garba, has congratulated the good people of the state in advance for the upcoming Christmas and New Year festivities.
The CP stated that the use of fireworks is completely banned, adding that “any group or individual is warned to desist from any act or conduct that will likely cause a breach of peace or breakdown of law and order.”
He stated that the Police Command has put in place adequate security arrangements in liaison with other security agencies to ensure the security of life and property before, during, and after the celebrations.
He made this known in a lecture held today at the Police Officers’ Mess Conference Hall. The Commissioner of Police directed all Departmental Heads, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Tactical Commanders, and other Supervising Officers to ensure compliance.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, and a copy was made available to the press in Kano on Monday.
Adequate security at worshipping centres and recreational facilities:
- Round-the-clock visibility patrols
- Effective traffic control for smooth flow of traffic throughout the state
- Widening of channels of intelligence gathering ahead of the festive periods
The Command has also issued the following security tips:
- Refrain from carrying unnecessary objects that may trigger suspicion or apprehension when going to worshipping centres.
- Be vigilant: Report any suspicious person, movement, or item to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency numbers.
- Underaged children and unlicensed persons are not allowed to operate motor vehicles, tricycles, or motorcycles. Road users should desist from overspeeding, car racing, reckless, and dangerous driving.
- All forms of unauthorised horse riding are prohibited. Parents and guardians should always accompany their children with adults while going out to checkmate cases of missing children, accidents, or any unsolicited dealings.
