Riparian communities of Ariya and Chibiyayi residing along the Hadejia-Jama’are and Yobe-Komadugu River Basins of Gamawa and Zaki local government areas of Bauchi State have been engaged in learning how to live and interact with the environment in which they find themselves.
The engagement was by the World Bank Team and specialists from the Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU) of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) Project in Bauchi State.
The engagement was targeted at enlightening the communities along the river corridors on the concept of community-driven development (CDD) to ensure buy-in to the project and ownership for sustainability purposes.
The Project Coordinator of ACReSAL, Bauchi State, Dr Ibrahim Kabir, while giving an overview of the project, said that the project is a World Bank-assisted project in collaboration with the Federal Government, the 19 Northern States, and the FCT.
He added that the project is targeted at resolving all lingering issues around agriculture, the environment, and water resources, particularly among riparian communities.
Ibrahim Kabir added that the visit by the World Bank and FPMU Team was to interact with the community members about their experiences and challenges associated with the environment, agriculture, and water that are directly affecting them and how the project can intervene in solving the problems.
At both Ariya and Chibiyayi communities, the team interacted with the community members, who found out how heterogeneous their issues are and the communal efforts they have made to minimise their menace.
The livelihood activities of the two communities are rice, beans, sorghum, watermelon, and vegetable farming, and they requested the support of farming inputs and wet and irrigation facilities in order to improve farming activities.
In their separate remarks, the community leaders expressed delight in selecting their domains for the important engagement and pledged to collaborate with the project team for the smooth implementation of the project in the state.
The communities seek more engagement from the project officials, considering the fact that the environment has a unique feature that must be maintained through regular reminders, as contained in a statement.
The slogan of the project is ACReSAL, Greening the Environment, Saving Lives, as contained in a statement by the Communications Unit, Bauchi ACReSAL.
