A major gas explosion was on Monday averted in Asaba as workers at a gas plant put off fire on its surface storage tank with fire extinguisher before the arrival of firefighters.
The incident which occurred at the plant belonging to Churacs Nig. Ltd, along the Expressway, close to Jemok/ MTN was said to have started when a truck was discharging gas to the station.
Nigerian Tribune reports that one of the staff carried an already lighted camp gas cylinder within the premises while the truck was dispensing the product which caused the fire that engulfed the storage tank.
As a result, there was stampede but some of the workers were bold to apply extinguishers with support of their high hydrant to put off the fire.
However, on arrival, firemen from the state fire service finally rested the fire by using two lengths of hose to dampen the surface tank and control it.
Two persons, one Miss Chioma and Mr. Abubakar sustained injuries and were treated at St. Joseph Hospital Asaba.
Confirming the report, the director of the state fire service, Mr Eugene Oziwele said only one person was injured appealing to the people of the state to be well guided by the rules on how to avoid fire incidents.
