CHAIRMAN, Research and Development Committee on the Oyo State and University of Ibadan collaboration on the development of herbal remedies for COVID-19, Professor Oluwasegun Ademowo has said that although the ‘COVID Organic’, Madagascar herbal medicine recorded its first death on Saturday, it does not mean that the remedy is not efficacious.
Madagascar recorded its first COVID-19 death in Toamasina last Saturday in a 57-year-old medical worker who suffered from diabetes and high blood pressure, the country’s national COVID-19 taskforce said on Sunday.
Ademowo, a professor of Pharmacology at the Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training (PIMRAT), stated that it will be wrong to say that the drug is not efficacious.
According to him, the herbal remedy only lacks scientific validation of its recipe.
”Not that it will not have an effect, it will but there is the need to know basic things like what it really contains, how it works, how to take and not to, and its possible side reactions. It is just like our own traditional herbal medications; we also have some that are actually useful against COVID-19.
“The difference between what we have or the way we have it in Nigeria and their own product is the packaging. And whatever things they have in their herbal medicine are things that we all know, at least going by what the media says that it contains,” he stated.
Professor Ademowo added that the Research and Development Committee on the Oyo State and UI collaboration on the development of herbal remedies for COVID- 19, however, intends to collect herbs suggested to be helpful against the infection, validate scientifically there efficacy, mode of activity and possible adverse effects in the body.
He, however, assured that doing this will make the findings of the Oyo State and University of Ibadan parley on herbal remedies for COVID-19 both locally and international acceptable and be able to pass through the validation of authorities like the World Health Organisation.
