Award-winning Nigerian comedian Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has made it clear that he will not be speaking on the widely discussed marital crisis between music icon Innocent Idibia, better known as 2Face, and his wife, actress Annie Idibia.
Basketmouth responded to the growing number of queries from fans and observers questioning his silence, given his long-standing friendship with the couple.
In a video message, the comedian emphasised that he is neither in the position nor qualified to comment on the issue, particularly considering his own past experience with divorce.
He humorously explained that in 2025, he has no interest in being dragged into controversies, hence his decision to keep sealed lips on the subject.
The only scenario where he might address the issue, he stated, would be to call out those adding unnecessary commentary, including media personality Toke Makinwa and others fueling the conversation.
“I have been receiving a lot of emails and DMs; people asking me, ‘Bright, why don’t you want to get involved in this 2Face and Annie matter?’ First of all, let me be clear—I am not in any position to get involved. I am not qualified at all, especially with my own history. I don’t want to say something that will make people drag me and remind me of my own past,” he stated.
Basketmouth added that he has known 2Face for nearly 27 years and Annie for 24 years, and out of respect for them, he prefers to remain silent. While his heart goes out to the couple, he believes the public should refrain from excessive speculation about their private lives.
“If I am going to get involved in any way, it will be to address those of you talking too much about their matter. Let’s all back off. They have kids, they have a family. Everybody just dey talk—Toke talk, this one talk, that one talk. There are other things to focus on,” he said.
Despite his stance on staying out of the controversy, the comedian admitted feeling personally affected by the timing of 2Face’s public announcement regarding his marriage. He jokingly lamented that the revelation interfered with the promotion of his upcoming comedy tour.
“Personally, 2Face did me strong thing. He messed me up because, given our history, he should have called me first before posting that announcement. If he had, I would have advised him to wait until late February because I have a tour. Now, with this news circulating, how do I even promote my shows? People will think I am insensitive. The money my team and I invested in this tour is very sensitive,” he quipped.
Basketmouth’s decision to stay silent on the matter comes as no surprise, given his experience with marital separation.
In 2022, the comedian publicly announced his divorce from his wife and mother of his children, Elsie Okpocha. At the time, he assured the public that they would continue co-parenting peacefully and requested privacy during the transition.
Interestingly, last year, Elsie seemingly hinted at the underlying issues in their marriage when she offered advice to women dealing with cheating spouses. She noted that a woman could be beautiful, s3xy, and possess all desirable qualities, yet still face infidelity in a relationship.
