The carpal bones are 8 small bones that attach your hand to your arm. These bones form an arch on the palm side of your hand where a sheet of strong tissue crosses from pinky side to thumb side at the base of your palm. Muscles, nerves, and tendons go through that arch or tunnel to move your fingers. If you use your fingers and move your wrist a lot, like you might do while typing or doing a repetitive task with your hands, the tendons and tissues get inflamed and swollen.

The tight band of tissue that forms the arch in your wrist does not stretch at all. So when the tendon area gets SWOLLEN, it presses tight on the other tissues. The nerve gets squished from the swelling. Then you get pain, numbness, tingling, etc. If nothing works to reduce the swelling that is pressing on the nerve, a surgeon may need to cut through the tight band of tissue to keep the nerve from permanent damage.

This is called a carpal tunnel release. Some of the preventive measures are: eating a very anti-inflammatory diet, keeping very good blood sugar, and taking breaks from work to prevent inflammation. Also wearing a carpal tunnel splint at night helps. Nobody wants to end up needing surgery.
