US President Donald Trump has made it clear that while his administration will support diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine, American troops will not be part of the equation.
Speaking after his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Monday, Trump said peace talks could move forward in the coming days, but insisted that any long-term security guarantees must come from Europe and Ukraine’s partners, not from US soldiers on the ground.
“We won’t send US soldiers to Ukraine,” Trump said, stressing that his approach is rooted in avoiding unnecessary foreign entanglements while encouraging regional powers to take responsibility.
He underlined that America’s role will focus on diplomacy, negotiations, and ensuring commitments are honoured by allies, rather than direct military involvement.
Zelenskyy, meanwhile, said he expected progress soon.
“Security guarantees will probably be ‘unpacked’ by our partners, and more and more details will emerge,” he told reporters after the meeting, according to Reuters.
“All of this will somehow be formalized on paper within the next week to 10 days.”
For Trump, the emphasis is on shifting responsibility to Europe and members of what he called the “Coalition of the Willing.”
He has argued that European nations, who face the immediate risks of the conflict, should be prepared to uphold the promises they have made to Ukraine.
Trump also explained why he chose not to phone Russian President Vladimir Putin in front of European leaders.
“I didn’t do it in front of them, I thought that would be disrespectful to President Putin. I wouldn’t do that because they have not had the warmest relations,” he told Fox News’ Fox & Friends.
“And actually, President Putin wouldn’t talk to the people from Europe, I mean that was part of the problem.”
