In celebrating the World Polio Day, president, Rotary Club of Ibadan Prestige, Mrs Omowumi Akintoroye, has said the club wants a polio-free community.
Speaking during the club’s Polio road walk sensitisation to the Bodija market on Tuesday, Akintoroye said the exercise is part of the Rotary International yearly event on disease prevention and treatment in one of Rotary six areas of focus.
She said the essence of the road walk is to create awareness about polio adding that the disease has been known for years for cripping infants.
Akintoroye said: “Many years ago, Rotary Club took it upon itself as a body to assist in the eradication of the disease and I’m glad to say that after those efforts, we were able to achieve success, except for two countries.
“Today, Rotary International alongside others, has been able to put an end to polio in Nigeria and the percentage of those two countries is actually so low. What we are agitating for right now is keeping polio at zero.
“So many of our women believe that when you are talking of immunisation against polio, they believe you are actually going round to give their children injection that will terminate their lives, so the exercise is to sensitise the market women and men to let them know the importance of taking immunisation for their children.”
