The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, (UNICEF) in partnership with the Sokoto State government is set to draft agenda for Sokoto State Social Protection Policy.
The exercise includes a three-day workshop and training for staff of the ministry of budget and planning, civil society organisations, Non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders in the state.
Speaking while declaring the exercise open, the acting permanent secretary in the state ministry of budget and economic planning, Usman Azika Bodinga, commended UNICEF for all its support to the state government, which he said were life-changing for the state.
While commending the state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, for offering a well-playing ground for every workforce in the state to discharge their duties optimally.
The permanent secretary urged the participants to take the workshop with all seriousness it deserves and focus on the objectives it is set out to achieve.
Speaking on behalf of the Sultanate council, the traditional ruler of Kilgori, Dr Jabi Kilgori, described the need for social protection as very critical especially at this period of pandemic.
While calling for a need to have a very sound policy to guide the programme, he called for the consultations of traditional rulers in the development of the policy.
He, however, assured that the Sultanate council is always ready to offer its total support to ensure effective implementation of the policy to achieve its aim.
A member of the state house of assembly who is also the house committee chairman on social welfare and poverty eradication, Honourable Kabiru Dauda, assures that lawmakers in the state will ensure timely passage of bills relating to the policy.
His counterpart in the assembly, Honourable Aminu Almustapha, representing Sabon Birni constituency, assured that total support will be expended for the quick passage of the bills at the assembly.
Almustapha who is also the chairman house committee on solid minerals revealed that more than 30,000 people in his constituency from different villages are taking refuge in Sabon Birni town.
Other partners who spoke at the venue include; representatives of International Labour Organization, World food programme (WFP) and United Nations Development Partners (UNDP).
