Uneasy calm at FUT Minna as gunmen attack shop, kidnap two children

FUT Minna, Main Campus Gate

Uneasy calm reigns at the Gidan Kwano main campus of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, in the early hours of Thursday as gunmen suspected to be armed bandits allegedly attacked a shop located opposite the institution’s entrance gate and were said to have abducted two children of the shop owner.

Students of the institution who live off-campus of the university stated that they heard sporadic gunshots opposite the institution’s entrance gate at about 12 am.

The image maker of the Niger State Police Command, DSP Abiodun Wasiu confirmed the incident on Thursday in Minna, the state capital, adding that, “On 10/11/2021 at about 23:30hrs, some suspected hoodlums attacked a shop at Gidan-Kwano opposite FUT Minna main gate and abducted two children of the shop owner.”

He added that some police operatives and vigilante men were immediately drafted to the scene for an aggressive manhunt of the hoodlums, stressing that during stop and search, one of the suspects was intercepted and arrested at Barkuta Village in Bosso Local Government Area of the state.

The institution’s Student Union President, Shuaib Isiaka Yahaya, also confirmed the incident.

Meanwhile, attempts to get the official reaction of the Public Relations officer, FUT, Minna, Mrs Lydia Legbo on the incident were not successful as her telephone number was not reachable when Tribune Online called to speak with her on the incident.

However, a source close to her office informed Tribune Online that the incident did not occur on the campus of the institution.

The reliable source from Legbo’s office who would not want his names in the print, however, assured the students and other residents of the institution of the safety of their lives and properties, stressing that the incident did not occur within the university campus.
