For many Nigerian students studying in the United Kingdom, the Graduate Route visa has remained one of the most common options after completing their studies. The route allows international graduates to stay in the UK temporarily to work or search for employment opportunities.
However, beginning from April 2026, the conditions surrounding post-study stay and transition into long-term work visas are becoming stricter. Although the Graduate Route remains available, the requirements for staying back in the UK after graduation are now more demanding.
In this article, Tribune Online explains the latest changes in simple terms.
The Graduate route
The UK Graduate Route still permits international students to remain in the country after completing their degrees.
Graduates can stay for up to two years after earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree, while PhD holders may remain for up to three years.
However, the visa does not provide a direct pathway to permanent residency. It is designed mainly as a temporary post-study arrangement, meaning students hoping to settle in the UK long-term must begin planning early for their next visa option.
Higher salary requirement for skilled jobs
Many international graduates eventually switch from the Graduate Route to the Skilled Worker visa in order to remain in the UK longer.
To qualify, applicants must secure jobs that meet the salary threshold or the approved “going rate” set by the UK Home Office.
The stricter salary requirement means that several lower-paying entry-level jobs may no longer qualify for sponsorship. As a result, graduates are increasingly expected to target positions that already meet Skilled Worker visa standards.

Stricter rules for dependants
Current UK immigration policy also maintains tighter restrictions on dependants. Most international students are only allowed to bring dependants if they are enrolled in specific postgraduate research programmes.
Because of this rule, many students now travel alone to the UK for their studies and early career experience.
Despite the tougher immigration measures, the UK government continues to prioritise industries experiencing labour shortages.
Fields such as healthcare, engineering, data science, cybersecurity, and software development still offer stronger opportunities for graduates seeking visa sponsorship through the Skilled Worker route.
