An undergraduate of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, Aisha Abubakar, has taken her campaign on climate change to her former primary school, Federal Government College Staff School and Magajin Rafin Primary School, Sokoto.
Aisha, a student of Geology, who was in the United States for America for a six weeks training on effects of climate change said she decided to share newly acquired experience with students of primary schools to strengthen their knowledge on climate change.
She said her believes in the younger generations makes her to take the awareness to the primary schools for them to key into it.
“As for we adults, we are already used to some of the factors of the climate change, so we need to let the children known exactly what are the contributing factors to the climate change and how it can be tackled.
“I even want to use this opportunity to called on the state government to key into this issue of climate change and make use of the available opportunities it presents .
“We should invest more on solar energy as well gas cooker, we should invest more on public transportation which will reduce vehicles on the road, thereby reduce the emissions in the town ”
Also speaking, a lecturer from the Geology department, UDUS, Mr Habibu Adamu, described Aisha as a dedicated student whom have shown quality of leadership in the state.
She said the department having gotten an opportunity to present a students for the training in the United States of America, did not hesitate to present Aisha for the trip
“We know she is very competent and that was why we supported her to represent us in the United States of America for the six weeks program.
” Upon her return back to the country, she decided to share her acquired knowledge with school children, and to the amazement of all us, she choose her former primary school.
“We believe this will motivate the students to know they can also be celebrated in the future”
Adamu however called on government and residents of the state to realize the current climate in the state can not be compared to that of about 10 years ago
“We cannot just wave it aside as changing of weather, we have to make use of the opportunity, we cannot continue with present usage of the climate.
“There is no need for us to have such fosel fuel in the street, we shouldn’t have high rate numbers of cars on the road.
“Sokoto State is blessed with a lot of solar radiation that government can tap into and make use of in the benefits of all residents”
Meanwhile, the Headmistress of Federal Government College Staff School, Mrs Katherine Basset, commend Aisha for choosing her alma mata as on of the schools to benefits from the programme.
She said the entire school is proud of Aisha while calling on current students of the school to take a cue from her by always remember their beginning.
Highlights of the programme was the plantation of trees in both Federal Government College Staff Primary School and Magajin Rafin primary school, Sokoto.
