Recognising the indispensable role of schools in shaping the moral fabric of society, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has designed a holistic teacher development programme aimed at building the capacity of teachers and education managers as champions of morality in schools.
The disclosure was made by the Chairman, UBEC Moral Reorientation and Regeneration Committee, Reverend Edwin Jarumai, at the 5-day training of Master Trainers on Moral Regeneration and Reorientation in Basic Education Schools in Nigeria on Tuesday.
According to him, “Before this auspicious event, the Commission instituted a range of coordinated efforts to ensure a structured approach to moral reinvigoration in our schools. We began by setting up a dedicated committee that worked assiduously to create a comprehensive concept note.”
He also stated that, “following this, an exploratory study was conducted in 12 states across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. The insights gained from this study culminated in a stakeholder workshop that brought together experts from academia, faith-based organisations, civil society groups, relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), international development partners, and the management and staff of the UBE Commission.”
“One of the pivotal recommendations from this stakeholder workshop was the urgent need to build the capacity of teachers and education managers to effectively drive the restoration of morality in our schools.
“In response to this, the Commission, with the assistance of a seasoned resource team, developed a comprehensive manual for moral regeneration and reorientation in basic education schools, along with an accompanying handbook for the training of teachers and educational managers,” he added.
The Clergyman stressed that, “Today, we embark on a 5-day training programme designed to enhance the capacity of state expert teams to effectively train select teachers and education managers from the 36 states and the FCT.”
Reverend Edwin Jarumai stressed that this training will expose master trainers to the key components of the manual, and the methodology of delivery, and provide familiarity with real-life cases, classroom activities, and supplementary reference materials to ensure adequate mastery.”
He added that, “As we move forward, let us be guided by the words of Nelson Mandela, who said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
“Our commitment to moral education is unwavering, and it is enshrined in the UBE Act, which mandates that every Nigerian child must have access to quality education that fosters not only intellectual development but also moral integrity,” he added.
According to him, “Our journey towards revitalising morality in our society through basic education schools in Nigeria has taken a significant leap forward.”
He then called on all stakeholders to join hands with UBEC in this noble endeavour, saying, Together, we can build a society where our children are not only academically proficient but also morally upright. Let us champion this cause with dedication, passion, and a steadfast commitment to excellence.”
