Two fishermen on fishing expedition drown in Ondo

Two persons have been confirmed dead in Ondo headquarters of Ondo West Local Government of Ondo State when they drowned in a river while on a fishing expedition.

The two men identified as GodsTime James and Boluwaji Akinade drowned at Arigba river behind Saint Andrews Grammar School, along Sir Olabanji Akingbule road, Arigbabola street, Ondo at about 6.30 am, on Friday morning.

It was gathered that the two men arrived at the river early in the morning to fish in the river when one of them, James slipped and fell into the river while the Akinade tried to rescue him but got drowned too.

According to a source, Akinade who was alerted by the cry of help from his friend rushed to help him but said he also fell into the deep side of the river and had died before help could reach them.

The source said: “One of the victims was fishing in the river when he fell into the river while his friend tried to rescue him, but in the process of trying to save his friend’s life, he too slipped into the deep side the river and drowned.

He said all efforts of an Hausa man to save them were not successful but he was only able to recover their dead bodies.

He, however, said police from the area have come to remove the remains of the two men and deposited them at the morgue.

However, a local Chief who spoke under the condition of anonymity, explained that the incident might have a spiritual undertone and said “about a week ago, an incident like this happened and claimed lives.

“Today, it has happened again and there was no flooding in this area this time around. I think it is high time community leaders come together and do the needful to stop these tragic incidents from continuing.”
