The Editorial Board of Maritime Media Ltd, organisers of the Maritime Industry Merit Awards (MIMA), has announced Tola Adenubi, a Nigerian Tribune Maritime Reporter, as the 2024 Maritime Reporter of the Year.
In a statement released on Thursday, the MIMA also named Barr Pius Akutah, MON, Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Shippers Council, as the Maritime Man of the Year 2024.
Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, the Managing Director/CEO of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), was recognised as the Most Promising Maritime CEO of the Year 2024.
The statement, titled “Winners Emerge for Maritime Man of the Year 2024,” was signed by the Chief Executive Officer of Maritime Media Ltd, Elder Asu Beks. It also revealed other notable awardees, including Babatunde Olomu, the Customs Area Controller for Apapa Customs Command, who won the Most Outstanding Customs Area Controller for Revenue Collection. Comptroller Dera Nnadi, the Customs Area Controller for Tin-Can Customs Command, received the Outstanding Customs Area Controller for Anti-Drug Campaign award.
The MIMA statement reads: “After a careful appraisal of the activities of critical stakeholders and their overall effect on the operations of the maritime sector for 2024, the Editorial Board of Maritime Media Ltd, organisers of the Maritime Industry Merit Awards (MIMA), Publishers of Nigeria’s flagship maritime journal, Shipping World, has announced the winners for the 2024 Maritime Man of the Year Award.”
Barr Pius Akutah was honoured for his outstanding and innovative leadership skills at the Nigerian Shippers Council.
He was also recognised for his pioneering role in advocating for the legislation and recognition of the Nigerian Shippers Council as the Ports and Shipping Economic Regulator.
In a similar vein, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of NPA, was named the Most Promising Maritime CEO. Since assuming office, Dr. Dantsoho has demonstrated a transformational agenda at the NPA. Recently, he was elected Chairman of the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa, becoming the first Nigerian to hold the position in the history of the regional body.
In other categories, Mr. Sylvester Egede, the former Port Manager at Tin-Can Island Port, was named the Best Port Manager.
“The Prince Olayiwola Shittu Prize for Most Outstanding Customs Broker Award was won by Prince Segun Oduntan, Vice President of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents, while the Comrade Adewale Adeyanju Prize for Most Outstanding Dock Worker went to Comrade Francis Bunu, Deputy President General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria.”
“The statement further revealed that the Pius Akutah Prize for Best Maritime Reporter was awarded to Mr. Tola Adenubi, a reporter with the Nigerian Tribune.”

Best Duty Collecting Bank: Zenith Bank
Most Outstanding Terminal Operator: West African Container Terminal, Port Harcourt.”
The statement also noted that the investiture ceremony for the winners will take place at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, in February 2025.
