No fewer than 11 people died while others sustained injuries in a mass shooting on Tuesday that occurred at an adult educational centre at Risbergska Skolan complex in Orebro, Sweden.
Police have also issued an alert that the school was under threat of “deadly violence.”
This is termed to be the deadliest of such incidents in the country’s history leaving 11 people dead, including the alleged shooter, law enforcement reported on Wednesday.
“It is a very painful day for all of Sweden, being confined to a classroom with fear for your own life is a nightmare that no one should have to experience.” Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said in a statement posted on social media.
Police early on Wednesday declared that there was “currently no information that indicates that the perpetrator acted based on ideological motives.”
The school was placed on lockdown, students were evacuated and family members were notified, police in the Bergslagen region said.
At first, officials stated that a small number of persons had been shot, but they did not specify if any had been killed. Near midnight, authorities reported that the alleged shooter and ten other persons were dead. The identities and ages of the deceased and injured have not been made known to the public yet.
According to Dr Hans Olsson, who works in Orebro, six patients were still receiving treatment at a nearby hospital as of 7am on Wednesday, the same number as the day before. According to him, no new patients have been admitted.
“The number of injured is still unclear,” police said in an update posted in Swedish. “We currently have no information on the condition of those who have been injured.”
