Susan Badeji leads RUN Theatre Arts students on tale of five seasons

THE students of the Department of Theatre Arts of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State recently exhibited the depth of their talents and what the university had deposited in them with a powerful performance in the Runway Project (Season 6) at the BOJA Arts Theatre of the university.

The production was carried out under the supervision and direction of a lecturer in the department, Susan Badeji, as part of requirements in partial fulfillment of THA 316: Make-up, Costume and Special Effects II and THA 418: Make-up, Costume and Special Effects: Advanced Practice II, which are core aspects of their training.

The programme, with the theme, “Innovation and Creativity,” featured six top designers, six exquisite designs, as well as live music and dance performances and many creative activities.

Speaking on the project, Badeji said the project was originally conceptualised as “Project Head to Toe” when it flagged off in 2012 at the BOJA Arts Theatre of Redeemer’s University in Mowe, Ogun State, when four students who specialised in Costume and Make-up Design, THA 320 and THA 412, respectively, (now known as THA 316 and THA 418) participated.

“Since then, we have had five seasons of the project with students like Debo Adedayo (Mr. Macaroni), Nancy Olaleye (Nnlicious), Naomi Emu-Hamzat (Njidekah), Maritza Gold (Paws & Claws), Onome Alade, Kemi Ademilua and many students who are already doing well in the creative/entrepreneurship industry. Although, the previous seasons were not without challenges, we have, however, decided not to give up and we shall continue to work towards its improvement with new concepts and ideas, aimed at harnessing the creative intuitions of students through inclusion, innovation, supervision, training and team-work,” she said.

According to her, those are important tools in every creative industry and are, therefore, not less required in the construction of costumes, make-up and props, adding that “the introduction of Special Effects (SFX) into the curriculum is laudable as it intensifies the need to give these students further avenue to express their creative and innovative tendencies.

“It is against this background that we unveil ‘Runway Project 2021’ with the theme, ‘Creativity and Innovation’ with six exquisite designs and a bonus one from six upcoming designers. These designs include, Avant-Garde, Golden 70s, Costume Internationale,’ Prom Look, Silver-Birds (Pageant look), Horror Movie Villains and the bonus, Naija Beauty in Diversity. It is imperative to state that the six designers, Tosin Adeaga-Omoti, Adesewa Ademola, Abundance Ahamefule, Chukwuka Ekpendu, Tobe Ohaka and Chinaza Akpunne worked very hard to accomplish these designs through self and team efforts.

“It is also worthy of mention that the presentations by Envy Dee, ApZee, Spirit-filled, piano comedy by Salvation Ajayi, Sekere dancers served as interlude and compliments the exhibition. I congratulate all the designers and thank my colleagues, Professor Afolorunsho Dairo (Dean, Faculty of Humanities); my Head of Department, Dr Julius (Jays) Adeoye; Professor Ahmed Yerima, Dr John Iwuh, Dr (Mrs) Eunice Uwadinma-Idemudia, Dr Peter Bello, Dr Damilola Babarinde and Mr Kunle Abogunloko for their invaluable input and support,” she said.

Badeji, in her closing remarks, thanked the university management, led by Professor Anthony Akinlo, the vice chancellor and the deputy vice chancellor, Professor (Mrs) Adebola Adebileje, for providing a fertile ground for creativity through learning.

She also acknowledged the support of theatre enthusiasts like Chief Bukola Adetula, Mr Olumide Eso, Mrs Sandra Gbadamosi and her mentor, Dr Chuks Okoye of the University of Ibadan.

“I also acknowledge the support of the students of the Department of Theatre Arts and students from other departments in Redeemer’s University for their support through their tailoring skills and for modelling the costumes of my students. We promise to keep the flag flying higher,” Badeji stated.
