Stakeholders task media on domestication of VAPP bill in Bauchi

Considering the vital role they play in reshaping the society, media practitioners have been charged to as a matter of urgency set the agenda for the need for policymakers to domesticate the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law in order to protect citizens against human rights abuses.

The call was made by the chairman of Bauchi State Network of Civil Society Organizations (BASNEC), Jinjiri Garba, during a stakeholders meeting on domesticating the VAPP bill in the state organised by Women Advocate Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) and funded by African Women’s Development Fund.

Garba said that the media have a pivotal role to play in advocating the passage of the bill in the state through consistent reportage, saying that it is only when there are good laws that violence, especially against women, would be tackled.

According to him, the state still uses penal code to administer justice on gender-based violence which needs to be reviewed immediately to conform with global best practices.

Also speaking, the Founder of Ikra Foundation for Women and Youth Development (IFWYD), Amina Garuba, said that the VAPP bill was professionally drafted, adding that IFWYD works closely with the social welfare department and security agencies in the state to stand up for victims of violence.

“Experts and professionals have been our guides towards ending all forms of violence. Let me appreciate Women Advocates Research Documentation Centre (WARDC) and African Women Development Fund for making this event a success,” she said.

Participants at the meeting included media practitioners, community leaders, women groups and other civil society organisations based in Bauchi.
