St. Anne’s School, Ibadan, has won two bronze and two silver medals in this year’s International Queen’s Essay competition, organised for secondary schools from Commonwealth countries.
The Nigerian Tribune reported that St. Anne’s School joined the competition in 2021 and won one gold and one silver medal that year. The following year, it won three bronze and two silver medals.
So far, St. Anne’s School has won a total of 11 medals in the competition: one gold, five silver, and five bronze.
Mr Olarewaju Olateju, one of the competition coordinators for the school, noted that the International Queen’s Essay Competition is organised for secondary schools in the Commonwealth countries to promote excellence among junior and senior secondary schools.
According to him, the school alumni, popularly known as the Seminary St Anne’s School Old Girls Association (SSASOGA), introduced the competition to the school in 2021 and provided all the training facilities and other necessary encouragement to register for the competition.
He described it as encouraging the volume of contributions, cash and kind, from SSASOGA to St. Anne’s School to uphold the vision of the state government towards the development of the school.
“We are not only doing well in both local, national, and international competitions; our students’ performances in the external and certificate examinations are very encouraging,” he said.
One of the principals of the school, Dr. Savage Olasunmbo Ajoke, described the leadership of SSASOGA, the alumni association of the school, as a visionary whose contributions to the development of the school had been impactful.
According to Dr. Savage, Lady Similola Oluwa Onabanjo, the team leader of SSASOGA, has contributed immensely to the infrastructure development of the school.
She noted that there had been the development of science and ICT laboratories, while scholarships have been given to students, not to mention the School on Air programme, all designed to promote academic excellence among students.
“The success of St. Anne’s School, Ibadan, is attributable to the active involvement of every stakeholder of the school, the input of the state government, the Teaching Service Commission, the old girls of the school, teachers, principals, and the parents’ forum.
“At St. Anne’s School, we work together as a family to bring the best out of our students. We are utilising every opportunity at our disposal to raise our children well,” she said.
Some of the students who participated in the Queen’s Essay Competition and won different medals for the school attested to the standard of the school.
Adanri Olamide, Biobaku Timileyin, Agbomeji Sunmisola, and Oladoye Praise described the competition as educational, adding that the programme should not be allowed to die.
They commended the SSASOGA members for their contributions towards the growth of the school.
According to them, St. Anne’s School’s teachers are student-friendly, and the school environment is conducive to learning.
The national chairman, Education Committee, SSASOGA, Pastor Mrs. Adeola Bamgbose, expressed satisfaction with the outstanding performances of the students in the academic programme since the school joined the programme in 2021.
She commended the school management and the teaching staff for their cooperation and contributions towards the growth of St. Anne’s School.
She noted that SSASOGA would not relent in its effort to turn the school around to meet the world standard and enjoined parents not to relent in their efforts to contribute their quota towards the development of the school.
Recently, members of SSASOGA met for the Annual General Meeting, during which they commended all the recipients of the International Queen’s Essay Competition awards since their introduction to the school in 2021.
