It has been observed that sinking of boreholes to serve as alternative to public water supply in many Nigerian communities constitutes danger to earth’s surface.
Professor Emmanuel Ariyibi, a Professor of Earth/Space Physics, made this known while delivering the 386 Inaugural Lecture Series of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, titled”Exploring Earth and Space for the benefit of Mankind.”
According to him, “the failures on the part of governments to provide basic water supply in most of the Nigeria communities have made individuals and even some government agencies to embark on sinking of boreholes to ameliorate inadequate water supply. The numbers of boreholes that would be sunk to cater for the greater part of a nation’s water needs will in no doubt have aggregate adverse effects on the stability of the earth’s subsurface.”
Also identified as a major threat to the earth surface are mining without professional experts this, according to Professor Ariyibi, could lead to tremor among other related disasters.
Professor Emmanuel Ariyibi, who also highlighted many attributes that mankind could derive from Earth and Space said misuse of this natural gift could lead to ecological problem.
The don urged the government to fund research to utilize good atmospheric weather condition of Nigeria especially Sun to solve the Nation’s energy challenges.
