Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, and other lawmakers are set to embark on a study visit to parliaments in other countries to strengthen inter-parliamentary relations and enhance their oversight functions.
This was disclosed during a meeting by the Senate Committee on Interparliamentary Affairs on Wednesday.
The visit, organised by the Senate Committee on Interparliamentary Affairs, aims to observe parliamentary activities, establish ties, and document best practices in other countries.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan emphasised the importance of studying democratic processes in other countries, particularly those with higher female representation, to learn from their experiences.
The lawmakers will also conduct oversight functions in State Assemblies to ensure effective governance and accountability. This initiative is part of the Senate’s objectives to build inter-parliamentary relationships within Nigeria and internationally and to enhance its oversight function.
The committee Chairman Senator Jimoh Ibrahim noted that the lawmakers would visit State Assemblies as part of their oversight functions, interact with state lawmakers to observe their activities, establish ties with parliaments in other countries, and document their practices.
In her contribution, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan emphasised the importance of studying the democratic processes of other countries during the visits to have a reflection on Nigeria. She also suggested the need to study countries with a larger representation of women to know how they were able to achieve it.
Additionally, the Kogi lawmaker also participated in an interactive session between the Senate Committee on Appropriation and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, the Account General of the federation, Oluwatoyin Sakirat Madein, to see the documentary evidences of the performances of the budgets.
