A 35-year-old security guard, Ahmed Abubakar, on Friday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for failing to supply three cows valued at N300,000 to one Douglas Obamen.
Abubakar, a resident of Ijaiye area of Lagos, is being tried for obtaining money under false presences and stealing.
The accused committed the offences sometime in March at Ojokoro, Abule-Egba, Lagos.
The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase told the court that the accused fraudulently obtained N300,000 from Obamen under the pretext of helping him purchase the cows
“The complainant wanted to buy cows and the accused told him to give him the money so that he can help him to buy them.
“The complainant gave him N300,000 for three cows but the accused absconded with the money to an unknown destination.
“Efforts made by the complainant to get his money or cows were unsuccessful as the accused refused to pick his calls.
“He was arrested after three months but could not give an account of the money,’’ the prosecutor said.
The offences violated Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes a three-year jail term for stealing, while section 314 attracts 15 years for obtaining money under false pretences.
The accused, however, pleaded innocence of the offences.
The Magistrate, Mrs F. F. George, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two suretie1s in like sum.
She said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until June 20, for the mention.
