Saraki, Anyim, Imoke, Dakwambo meet aggrieved Oyo PDP politicians

Steps towards uniting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State continued on Tuesday, with the PDP National Reconciliatory and Strategy Committee led by former Senate President, Bukola Saraki having meetings with some of the aggrieved politicians, in Ibadan.

Tuesday’s double meetings began with a first meeting with the likes of Adebisi Olopoeyan, Nureni Akanbi at Carlton Gate Hotel, Ibadan, and another meeting held at the presidential lodge of the government house, Ibadan, with Mulikat Adeola-Adeola, Micheal Okunlade, Hazeem Gbolarunmi and others in attendance.

Other members of the PDP Committee that joined Saraki in meeting the aggrieved Oyo PDP stakeholders were former Cross River governor, Liyel Imoke; former Gombe governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo and former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim.

Speaking at the end of the meetings, Saraki said the committee had extracted the commitment of the stakeholders and especially Governor Seyi Makinde who had assured of beginning to implement the demands of the aggrieved Oyo PDP politicians moving forward.

Asked the specific demands of the aggrieved politicians, Saraki disclosed that all they want is more recognition in view of the fact that they worked hard towards the election of Makinde as governor.

Saraki said all the parties agreed that Makinde was doing well in governance and had resolved to put their differences aside and work very closely with Makinde once they are fully recognised.

Saraki said: “I think it is the beginning but we have started the process. The commitments have been made by the governor and the stakeholders. That has started and some steps have already been taken today. We are very confident that for coming out of it, definitely, there is new dawn ahead of us here in Oyo State.

“The first thing everybody says is that we know that our governor is performing; on the area of governance, we are doing very well, they are all proud to be associated with the governor; they believe that there should be a need for more recognition to some of the people that worked hard in the election and the governor has said, I am doing my best; those who have not been fully recognised will be fully recognised and they have all said once that is done by the governor, they are good to go and they are ready to work with him. So, it is just to start implementing those and rolling that down the line.

“I am confident that with the calibre of people that have attended, the issues expressed; the issues are not issues that are not insurmountable and the governor has made that commitment and we all know that he is a man that will deliver by his performance and antecedents.

“All the parties have resolved to work very closely together under the leadership of our performing governor, Seyi Makinde and all the different areas of differences, we have all decided to put it aside and work towards ensuring that PDP is victorious not only in the state but at the national level.”

Describing the issues in Oyo state as not insurmountable, he said the committee was focused on having a stronger PDP from the state to the South-West zone and then to the national level.

Saraki said a stronger PDP was expedient in the interest of Nigerians who he said to believe that the PDP is the platform that can provide a better future for the nation.

He added, “I think the country also understands that today if you look at what is happening in the other party, that the alternative for us is in Nigeria today is this party, and they believe that this party is the platform that will provide that future for us in making Nigeria a better place.”

Meanwhile, it was gathered that the Saraki committee gave Governor Seyi Makinde an August ending deadline to meet the yearning of the aggrieved party members for more recognition.

Speaking with journalists after the first meeting held at Carlton Gate, Olopoeyan prayed Makinde yields to the Saraki committee mandate to meet the agitations of the aggrieved members and run an all-inclusive government.

“The Saraki led committee and I met at Carlton gate here in Ibadan and gave the governor till the end of this month to meet with the demands. So, the governor needs to do the needful before we can soft-pedal on our agitations. They asked him to make aggrieved members happy and run an all-inclusive government.

“The reconciliation committee has given him (Makinde) an ultimatum till the end of the month to do the needful and after that, they will now come back again to discuss the way forward.

“I agree with the Saraki led reconciliation committee on their resolution today. They are the party leaders and we have to respect them.

“So, I can only talk about the issue of reconciliation when the reconciliation committee comes together again at the end of this month,” Olopoeyan said.
