Rotary Club inaugurates health centre, donates textbooks to school in Ibadan

The Rotary Club of Ibadan Jericho Metro inaugurated a renovated primary health centre at Ibadan South West Local Government, Town Planning, on Tuesday.

The club also donated textbooks worth N475,765 to the library at Baptist Secondary School, Liberty Road, Oke-Ado.

The project was inaugurated during the club’s district governor, District 9125, Mr Sagab Sani Ahmed’s visit to the club in Ibadan.

Speaking during the inauguration, the governor lauded the club for the initiative, just as he encouraged them to do more for the betterment of society.

He said health is one of the areas of focus for Rotary International, and that is why intervention at the health centre is basically aimed at the development of primary healthcare infrastructure in our community.

“This is a welcome development, as one of the seven areas of focus of Rotary International is basic education and literacy. Rotary Clubs has over 36,000 clubs in the world, with 147 in Nigeria, and the Rotary Club of Ibadan-Jericho Metro, which is doing these projects, is one of those clubs.

“So, what Rotary Club does is look at the specific areas where it can intervene with improvement in what is intended to be achieved, and that is the essence of this programme of donating books to Baptist Secondary School, Ibadan.

“With the population that we have today and the economy, it may not be possible for every parent to ensure that the children get all the books that are required for learning, and therefore, schools need to equip their libraries by providing books for students, and this is one of such efforts for these books to be put in a library for students to benefit from.”

In his remarks, the club president, Mr Damilola Olaleye, thanked Ahmed for his visit and the inauguration of the club’s projects.

He charged healthcare management to maintain the facility so as to encourage them to do more likewise with the books donated to the school.

He stated that, “We did a needs assessment to actually see what is needed in that primary healthcare centre, and we found that they were lacking lots of things, and that is why we have to come there as a club to ensure that we meet their needs, which involve tiling of the place, providing mosquito nets for all the rooms, and providing drug cabinets, and we also ensured that the place is well ventilated by providing fans and painting the rooms.”

In their separate remarks, the officer-in-charge of Oluyole Primary Health Centre, Funlayo Ogunwunmiju, and the principal of Baptist Secondary School, Mrs Akinpelu Olumide, commended the Rotary Club of Ibadan-Jericho Metro for the gesture while calling on other organisations to emulate the club.
