A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Atum Humanitarian and Charitable Initiative has called on the newly appointed Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Nentawe Yilwatda, to prioritize the implementation of policies that will widespread poverty and vulnerability in Nigeria.
In a statement, the Executive Chairman of the initiative, Ismaila Yusuf Atus, congratulated the minister and emphasized the urgent need to address the widespread poverty and health challenges faced by millions of Nigerians. He expressed the organization’s readiness to collaborate with the ministry in developing effective poverty-reduction schemes.
“I congratulate the new minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty reduction,” Atus said. “We encourage him to adopt a liberal and inclusive approach in his role. This position is meant to serve the poor, and we urge him to actively seek global funding to support Nigerians during these difficult times.”
Atus further emphasized the importance of the minister engaging with NGOs, stating, “This is a post for serving the people, not for personal aggrandizement. He should collaborate with NGOs that are already striving to help the vulnerable, and we are ready to work with him tirelessly.”
The Atum Foundation recently launched a policy aimed at raising N500 million to support two million underprivileged Nigerians, a response to the growing economic hardship across the country. The organization has also called on wealthy Nigerians to join in humanitarian efforts, instead of hoarding wealth in foreign accounts while millions suffer.
“Food prices have skyrocketed, making basic necessities inaccessible to the ordinary person,” Atus lamented. “We are committed to raising N500 million to help alleviate hunger among two million Nigerians. However, we also call on the government to intensify its efforts in reducing the hardships faced by its citizens. While some progress has been made, it’s not enough. The government needs to step up, and politicians must do more to assist the masses.”
Atus, who is also the Executive Chairman of Woskybet, urged politicians and affluent Nigerians to refrain from stashing wealth abroad, and instead, invest in the country’s future by supporting the less fortunate. “Now is the time for leaders to stand with the people and provide the assistance they desperately need,” he concluded.
