THE Federal Government has revealed that a new policy is being developed to enhance teachers’ career progression as part of ongoing efforts to improve the quality of teachers and attract best brains to the profession.

Registrar and chief executive of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Professor Josiah Ajiboye, made this known at an interactive session with newsmen in Abuja.
He said the council has developed initial Teachers’ Career Progression and Policy document, saying the document would be presented to the critical stakeholders to critique and make their inputs before it is finally presented to the minister of education.
He said: “In the shortest possible time, Nigeria will have what is called Teacher Career Progression Policy document under this administration.
“The idea is that if you are employed as a teacher today, you should be able to know where you are going to be in the next three years, unlike when somebody is employed as a teacher, 10-15 years, the person remains on the same spot, not knowing where they are going or where they will end.
“Like it is done in other professions, people should know where they are going to be and the ultimate goal should be to be a director. That is the last cadre; but there will be a ladder before you get to that level, and the new policy document is targeting that.”
Ajiboye said he believed this would give assurance and motivation to teachers.
