The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a 27-year-old businessman who attempted to commit suicide due to his indebtedness to a business colleague.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, who said the incident occurred on Friday, August 23.
According to Tochukwu, the rescued man, identified as Alozie John, hails from Iselu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State but resides in Umunnachi, Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State.

He engaged the Police Command in a WhatsApp chat after consuming a poisonous substance, intending to end his life because of his debt of one million, two hundred thousand naira (₦1,200,000) to his livestock supplier.
Tochukwu further stated that after rescuing the man, the police debriefed him, provided medical assistance, and placed him in safe custody for monitoring.
The statement reads: “On 23/8/2024, Anambra Police rescued a young man who attempted to take his own life. He was debriefed, provided with medical assistance, and kept in safe custody for monitoring.
“The young man, later identified as Alozie John, aged 27, from Isielu LGA, Ebonyi State, but residing in Umunnachi, Dunukofia LGA, sent a WhatsApp message to the Command, indicating that he had consumed a poisonous substance with the intention of ending his life due to his debt of one million, two hundred thousand naira to his livestock supplier.
“He further confessed that he deals in selling live chickens and, after taking the harmful chemical, did not experience any immediate adverse effects.
“Meanwhile, his mother was contacted, and she is currently assisting the police with evaluation, references, and the transfer to a better facility for proper and necessary care of the young man.”
