The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed the imposition of a curfew in Sabon Birni town, Sabon Birni local government area of Sokoto state in order to control the protests by the youth over the killing of the district head of Gatawa.
The command’s spokesman, ASP Ahmed Rufa’i, stated that the movement in the area is restricted between 6 am and 6 pm until further notice, with the aim of restoring law and order in the area.
It was reported that hundreds of youth flooded some major roads in the community holding sticks and setting bonfires. Sources in the community mentioned that the youth had made an unsuccessful attempt to set the residences of some prominent politicians in the area on fire. Security operatives intervened before any damage occurred.
The protesters also burned down the local government Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a courtroom.
Additionally, they broke into the local government store and destroyed fertilizers.
