Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has declared that the local government election in the state on Wednesday will change the negative narrative of the council poll in the state and Nigeria as a whole through credible elections.
The Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Plangji Daniel Cishak, assured that the election will definitely be a clear departure from the past based on the arrangements on the ground and general support from the people of Plateau State across the board.
“I want to tell you that PLASIEC is independent under my watch; I can categorically tell you as well that there is no interference in our operations from anywhere. We have no doubt received support in terms of doing what is acceptable to the people of Plateau State. The governor is a beneficiary of the rule of law and due process; he has never in any way interfered in our preparation for this exercise.
“Likewise, the State Assembly has demonstrated leadership to us by doing what is required of them to do as far as this election is concerned. I can tell you that Plateau people are united in purpose for this local government election.”.
On the readiness of the Commission for the Wednesday election, Hon. Cishal told the Nigerian Tribune that more than eighty per cent of the processes in term logistics have been deployed to ensure a hitch-free election, adding that security and personnel are equally being mobilised ahead of the election.
“Election is not an event but a process; more than eighty per cent of the process has been completed. We are doing our best as humanly as possible; we are not envisaging any issue. As I am talking to you, our materials are already in the local government areas, and by tomorrow morning or later in the day, sensitive materials will follow.
“We are trying to ensure that materials get to all the local government by tomorrow as early as possible. Invariably, if materials are received on time, there is the likelihood that we will finish during the daytime.”.
He, therefore, appealed to leaders of political parties and their supporters to eschew and refrain from any act that might jeopardise the process, adding that a local government election is to the development of any community.
