Plan to stop open defecation by 2025 underway — Sanitation Minister

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev, has stated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is very determined to provide adequate water to Nigerians, thereby ensuring affordable toilets for the citizenry as a measure to achieve open defecation-free status by 2025.

Professor Utsev added that in the course of achieving the above objectives, President Tinubu has resolved to address a myriad of challenges confronting the provision of portable water to the populace.

Making this assertion on Tuesday in Kano, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation mentioned that this determination prompted him to visit the Hadejia Jamare River Basin Authority located in the state capital.

He emphasised, “Water is very important and essential to every aspect of life,” stating that the ministry is determined to look into increasing the capacity and funding of the river basin project as well as addressing the challenges it faces.

Furthermore, he emphasised the need to address the sanitation aspect, noting that without good health, the citizenry would be at risk.

He disclosed that President Tinubu is determined to address food security, good education, and portable water for the populace, highlighting that these aspects cannot be achieved without the support of the Ministry of Water and Sanitation.

Hence, the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation is taking the provision of water to the populace very seriously, and the ministry will leave no stone unturned to achieve this laudable goal.

“We aim to achieve open defecation-free status by the year 2025, and we are working tirelessly towards this goal. What we are saying is that the teeming masses of the country should rally around Mr. President in this drive.”

Earlier, during his visit to the state government, Prof. Utsev urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration to assist the federal government in boosting the provision of water and tackling the sanitation aspect.

In response, the Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, called on the federal government to provide financial intervention to address the challenges faced by virtually all 21 dams in the state.

He disclosed that most of these dams were constructed over 40 years ago and are currently facing various challenges.

Repairing and making them more functional would require a significant amount of money, and the state cannot shoulder its responsibilities alone.
