Speaking last Thursday at the 9th Benin National Award from the Bini National Congress (BNC) in the Edo State Capital, the former Edo
state governor has declared that he survived several attempts to unseat him by those he claimed wanted to hijack the party structures.
He said: “The timing of the investiture was significant given that I had just survived another attempted coup which died with a whimper.
For a Bini group, my own people to say ‘oga we want to honour you’, I thought finally yes I deserved this honour. I thank you for doing this to me. This is one of my proudest moments,“ he reportedly said But speaking with Sunday Tribune in a telephone interview, Timi Frank said the APC national chairman was celebrating failure, not victory.
The party publicity scribe expressed concern that the party has been embroiled in intractable crises in states chapters under the leadership of Chief Oyegun.
He said:’’ What is he celebrating? As far as I am concerned, he is celebrating failure and buying time.
‘’You can only celebrate when the party is growing under you. Oyegun and other members of his national working committee know that they
have failed.
‘You will recall that the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former vice-president, Atiku Abubakar, and Senate President, Bukola Saraki had all complained about his leadership. This is the time to build the party and under Chief Oyegun, this party will continue to sink deeper into further crisis and it will die soon.’’
He, however, called on those rewarded with board appointments to live up to expectations of the responsibilities they have been saddled with.
‘’The Board appointments are long overdue, it was late but the government eventually did it. I pray that those given will be able to deliver on the responsibilities. ‘’
