Our fears and hopes as the election draws near

Isaiah Temitope
As children of God, we should do and anticipate things by faith. If we do, we would not have any course to entertain any form of fear. So, I don’t have any fears concerning the election. And also, I do hope for a free and fair election. Yes, I believe my vote will count.

No one is certain of a free and fair election, but I hope all goes well. I would advise everyone to always be careful. The contesting parties keep attacking one another, and that has led to the loss of innocent lives. People just have to be very vigilant. What happens within the first two to three days before election will determine whether I’m going to vote or not. And if I happen to vote, I believe it will count.

Even when it was not an election period, we walked in fears, let alone now that election is fast approaching. Concerning this election, I fear that it might be rigged which could result in civil war or a military coup. But I just hope for a peaceful democratic transition. All the same, I’m sure my vote and that of my relatives will count. By the special Grace of God, I will go to the polling station to cast my vote come February 16.

A lot of youths out there are not ready to vote because it is in this country that votes do not count. Corruption is rampant in our government. Even though there are sensitisations programmes asking us to vote, we know that at the end of everything our votes would not count. As I said earlier, corruption is our problem in this country. Those who have money and power use them to control the underprivileged. I just hope for change.

My fear about the general elections, especially the presidential poll, is that the ruling party might use the power of incumbency to manipulate the results of the election in its favour, and it could lead to inter-ethnic wars. It could also attract sanctions by international organisations like the United Nations, IMF, AU etc. Yes, I’m very sure that my vote will count provided the election went well.

I fear that there might be manipulation of results by the contesting parties, which could lead to violence. But I pray and hope for God’s intervention. Yes, my vote will count provided the election was free and fair.

I have feeling a that the forthcoming elections would not be a free and fair one as usual because there would be a lot of gross misconduct. Even before the election, there have been a lot of bribery from all political parties. Nigerians are still being cajoled with mere gifts and promises. Nigerians haven’t learnt their lessons and if we aren’t careful, we might end up choosing another wrong candidate for the next four years, which is one of my biggest fears.

In Nigeria today, we no longer get retarded rather we advance on a regular basis. Ever since Nigeria entered into this democratic dispensation, we have been recording free, fair and credible elections with the help of the then, National Electoral Commission (NEC) which has now become Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). So, in my opinion, the forthcoming general elections will be more peaceful than the previous ones. And I believe that my vote will count.

The fear of the election being rigged has enveloped me ever since I got to notice that political party members have been all out to buy PVCs, all in a bid to favour their party candidates. I fear that this election might be a do or die affair.
