In commemoration of the 2021 International Children’s Day celebration, Oak Rural Health Organisation (ORHA) has sensitised mothers and children’s caregivers on the importance of adequate and correct nutritional supplements and balanced meals for children.
The sensitisation became imperative given that according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 2.5 billion children suffer from malnutrition globally. Of this figure, 921,618 (children aged 6-59 months) are in Nigeria.
The sensitisation which took place on Thursday at Elewi Odo community in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, had a nutritionist from University College Hospital, Ibadan, enlighten the parents on the importance of a balanced diet and its importance to the growth of children.
She also educated them on how to access a balanced diet with a low budget, emphasising that with little money they could source a mix of food items that would give them balanced meals and help in the growth and development of their children. She noted that focusing on a particular class of food does not augur well for children.
Food items and nutritional supplements, as well as antiworm drugs and vitamin A supplements, were distributed to the children and parents who trooped out in their numbers.
On the essence of the programme, the chairman of ORHO, Mr Amos Ajisekola, said an outreach like this remains an integral part of the organisation’s mandate, as it continues in its drive to provide health care information and free services to rural dwellers.
“The items we provided for them is to assist the parents at this time the negative COVID-19 impacts are still affecting families, amidst heightened economic upheavals,” he said.
