As part of efforts to call bad eggs in the government of the day to order and express the danger of the prolonged tussle between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government on Nigerian students, prolific film producer, Oreofe Williams, and undergraduates of the Department of English of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, have used a creative theatre project to say enough is enough.
The political play, which was written and directed by Oreofe Williams; co-directed by Femi Junaid and Oba Adeyemi, and lecturer-in-charge, Wale Ajayi, was staged penultimate Thursday at the Pit Theatre for ENG 156 (Introduction to Literature Workshop).
Following his passion for the institution and mission to produce talented young filmmakers, the leading theatre scholar, who is also a producer, director, actor, and owner of a film village, was delighted to return to his alumni to impart on the young actors.
The work will be the third successful projects Oreofe Williams is staging as former staff and lecturer of the institution.
Reviewing the stage play, Williams noted that the lavish setting of the play portrays the extravagant lifestyle of Nigerian politicians as the props helped to present the personality and character of Gbaremu as a learned, egotistical, and egoistic man who would go to any length to achieve his dream of becoming a Senator.
“Nevertheless, a closer observation of Glory To The Fools indicates a realistic depiction of the current political atmosphere of Nigeria in the 21st century. It reveals the eagerness of the masses to put their trust in whoever appears to genuinely have their interest at heart. They have high expectations which are sometimes unrealistic, for example, their belief in Gbaremu’s DEAL INITIATIVE which is presented to proffer unrealistic benefits.
“The mention of famous Nigerian musicians such as Davido and Naira Marley, trendy dance steps like Shakiti Bobo, Shoki, and Zanku further confirms that the play is set in the present day. This assertion is supported by the constant references to the ASUU strike and the repetitive negotiations that transpire between the organisation and the Nigerian government,” he added.
