Ondo poly workers to embark on industrial action over 11 months unpaid salary arrears

Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State

The workers of the Ondo state-owned Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, (RUGIPO), on Thursday, resolved to commence an Industrial action on Friday following the failure of the management to pay about 11 months salary arrears.

The workers threatened not to return to their offices until their salaries are paid, alleging that they were being owed salaries of December 2016, January 2017 and January to October 2021.

The workers who also disclosed that the management had failed to promote any of the workers in the last two years, alleged the school management of not being sensitive to the plight of the workers.

Speaking after the congress, the chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics of the institution, Mr Chris Olowolade, said workers of the institution decided to embark on the strike following the insensitive gesture of the management of the school.

He said: “The management of this institution is owing us a backlog of salary, aside from the 11 months salary arrears, we have three months promotion arrears. The last promotion was done in 2018, now we are in 2021.

“When you are in an office without moving forward, the motivation would not be there. Also, the management has not been recognising the unions as core stakeholders in the scheme of things in the campus, this and many other issues but the salary is the major reason”

Also, the Chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union of the institution, Mr Adebayo Obayoriade, disclosed that the leadership of the unions in the school had met with the management of the school to find a lasting solution to the challenge.

He, however, said there was no positive response from the management, saying the union had to meet with elders of the Owo Community including the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye and other traditional rulers as well as other prominent indigenes in the Owo Local Government Area, but to no avail.

He said: “The union has written to the council, we have written to the government to no avail, we are not fighting anybody but they should pay our salary.

“We are being owed 11 months and as we are speaking now, we have not received salary this year. This is the problem.”

The NASU Chairman insisted the situation has gone of control as time was no longer on their side, which necessitated a call for industrial action.

In a reaction, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr Samuel Ojo, said that situation was under control.
