The materials distributed through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) included bags of cement, iron sheets, nails, asbestos, bags of rice, cartons of vegetable oil, among others, was donated in fulfilment of the state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu’s promise during his visit to the scene of the incident.
Speaking during the presentation of the materials, Akeredolu said the gesture was a demonstration of his administration to ameliorate the plight of the victims.
The governor, represented by his deputy, Agboola Ajayi, said the quick response of the state government to the victims showed that the current administration in the state was responsive to the needs and welfare of the people.
He, however, called on the people of the state to keep their environment clean, saying cleanliness is next to godliness, urging them to desist from dumping refuse in the drainage to avoid flooding.
He said: “The need to reduce disaster in our environment remains the joint responsibility of the government and the people. There is a need for public and private sectors and civil society organisations, academic and research institutions to work closely and create opportunities for collaboration.
“I want to stress that disaster risk reduction is a joint responsibility, we should at all times prevent all preventable within and outside our environment to enable us live a meaningful life.”
He solicited for the support and assistance of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), by donating to the victims, saying the materials donated by the state may not be enough.
