The Commander of Ondo State Security Network, known as the Amotekun Corps, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, expressed deep concern over the increasing attacks on commercial motorcyclists in the state.
He revealed that in the last three weeks, no less than 20 commercial motorcyclists have been killed.
Adeleye shared this information during the launch of the 2023/2024 Ember Months and Joint Border Patrol, aimed at ensuring a crime-free holiday season. He emphasized that these motorcyclists have become prime targets for criminals within the state.
Adeleye stressed that the ban on commercial motorcycles operating from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m, as mandated by the government, remains in effect. Unregistered vehicles with tinted windows will be impounded, and drivers and owners of such vehicles are urged to obtain Police permits.
“We are appealing to commercial motorcyclists to rest after working for 12 hours to help us identify criminal elements,” Adeleye remarked. He also made it clear that vehicles without visible registration numbers and those with tinted windows must comply with the new regulations.
In the fight against criminal activities, Adeleye stated that the Amotekun Corps is determined to reduce crime to a minimum during the holiday season. All trouble-prone areas within the state will be thoroughly patrolled.
He also reported the arrest of 11 suspected criminals, with six of them caught in possession of locally-made weapons. Some of these weapons had been altered, presenting a potential threat to residents and commuters.
Adeleye issued a strong warning to potential troublemakers during the upcoming yuletide season, stating that it would not be “business as usual” in Ondo State. The Amotekun Corps, in collaboration with other security agencies, is committed to curbing criminal activities such as kidnapping and property-related crimes.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to eradicating kidnappers, bandits, and other criminal elements from the state. The Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Muktar Adamu, emphasized the significance of the “Exercise Still Water III, 2023,” aimed at combating various crimes during the holiday season.
Adamu called on all criminals operating in the brigade’s area of responsibility to cease their activities, as they would face legal consequences. He urged security agencies, traditional leaders, and community leaders to provide relevant and credible information to assist the military in maintaining security.
In response, Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, appreciated the efforts of security agencies in the state. He affirmed the state’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Army and other security agencies. Akeredolu highlighted the successful collaboration between security agencies in joint clearance operations throughout the state.
He encouraged a united effort to create a safer and better future for Nigeria, ensuring it can be compared to developed countries regarding safety and security.
