I have observed the trend where people will leave their houses at 4.30am to go register for Permanent Voter Card (PVC) to no avail.
The act of INEC officials telling people to go home and come back the following day without registering them is growing each day.
I am of the opinion that INEC does not have enough manpower to attend to the population and this is a step backward to our democracy. In a situation where people who already gave up on Nigeria decide to have a change of mindset, yet they are deprived of the right to register, the question is this, what then are we practicing?
Our Movement (PROACTIVE VOLUNTARY CAMPAIGN) has been engaging Nigerians on the need to get their PVC. We have also been helpful by giving information. We have invested so much in ensuring we change the mindset of people to come out and register for PVC. If after all our efforts for Nigerians to come out to register they are still rejected, this will not augur well for our democracy. Thus, we are appealing to INEC to deploy a swift and effective method of attending to people.
We would have resorted to a protest on Friday, 10th August, but we hope this letter will communicate our message and grief across to INEC.
With no iota of doubt, we know Nigerians never took this exercise serious at the initial stage, which is the reason the pressure is so much on INEC. We also appreciate INEC for their efforts thus far as we are aware of their commitment towards the success of the forthcoming election. But we are asking for more because PVC is our right and we should not be deprived of it.
The purpose of this letter is not to condemn the commission, but to air our views and be the voice of the people.
