Okowa’s wife charges nursing mothers on proper nutrition, deworming

Cable Point, suburb of Asaba predominantly populated by members of the Arewa community in Delta State, recently witnessed activities as maternal and children micro nutrient supplementation and mass deworming exercise was flagged off by wife of the state governor, Dame Okowa amid jubilation from nursing mothers.

Some mothers, including Janeth Okobi, Aisha Bello and  Rodah  Okon, expressed  satisfaction with the exercise which they said, has exposed them to basic child and mother nutrition and  the need to deworm  children at the appropriate time.

Flagging off the exercise which was in collaboration with the state Primary Healthcare Development Agency (PHDA), Mrs. Okowa explained that the fight against nutritional deficiency among pregnant women and children cannot be overemphasised.

She called on well-meaning individuals, organisations and donor agencies to be part of the move to eradicate malnutrition among expectant mothers and children.

She said that her pet project, the ‘O5 Initiative’ and the Delta State PHCDA were in collaboration to improve the nutritional status of pregnant women and children in the state, adding that the exercise would be extended to the 25 local government areas of the state.

She said: “As the state nutrition ambassador, I have championed the cause for complete nutrition through the ‘O5 Initiative’ free grassroots medical outreach across the state. The outreach afforded me the opportunity to sensitise the public on the ideals for proper nutrition; this I can boldly say was well received.”

Mrs. Okowa also used the occasion to admonish mothers who engaged in indecent dressing to public places.

Displeased with the manner some mothers appeared at the event, she noted that the present generation of women should show maturity to womanhood.

“How will you and your husband leave home and your husband will allow you to come out in this manner. Nurses and doctors should please teach them how to dress when they come to the hospitals,” Mrs. Okowa said.

She counseled women to give birth to children they can comfortably train in view of the economic uncertainties in the country.

Chairman of Delta State PHCDA, Dr. Isioma Okobah, pointed out that the event was in line with the objective of the agency geared towards encouraging mothers to eat well and to feed children with nutritious food to safeguard their health.

Highlight of the occasion was nutrition experts sensitising nursing mothers on the benefits of affordable nutritious meals at the open market irrespective of their financial position.

Donations of nutrition supplements, de-worming medicine and mosquito nets to the attendees were made by some supporters of the exercise.
