Senator Magnus Abe, Chairman of the National Agency for The Great Green Wall (NAGGW) and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, says the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his deputy, entire cabinet, and former Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa will boost the APC’s support in the South-South.
Abe made this known in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Parry Saroh Benson, describing the development as a signal that Nigeria’s democracy is actually stronger under the APC-led government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He said democracy thrives where citizens enjoy true freedom of association and freedom of choice.
The former Senator representing Rivers South-East senatorial district said:
“Under President Tinubu, Nigerians have seen a tremendous increase in the resources available to the states, and serious-minded Governors have been able to utilise that advantage to the benefit of their people.
This is the merit that Sheriff Oborevwori and his team have seen and decided to take advantage of it, to move the people of Delta State closer to the centre to accelerate development.
It is a step in the right direction and I commend him.”
The statement recalled that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2007, as a sitting Vice President, to contest for the presidency, adding that the decision by Oborevwori and Okowa to defect to the APC is in order and would benefit the good people of Delta State and the South-South in general.
Addressing those insinuating that the President’s actions are leading to a one-party state, Abe urged the PDP to reorganize itself instead of playing the victim card.
He said it is not the duty or responsibility of President Tinubu and the APC to build opposition against themselves.
Abe also called on Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Festus Keyamo, Chief Ayeni, and other leaders of the APC in Delta State to rally around Governor Oborevwori and his team to fast-track their seamless integration into the party.
He added that the APC under President Tinubu is large enough to accommodate all Nigerians.
