Speaking with Tribune Online, shortly after the debate, the Chairperson, Women Association of Quantity Surveyors in Nigeria (WAQSN), Aderonke Oyelami, informed that the school debate was put together as part of activities marking the International Women’s Day celebration.
“The debate which had all female participants is being held belatedly because the International Women’s Day usually held on the 8th of March and we did celebrate on the 8th of March but because in Nigeria 8th of March was the day before the elections and we were constrained so we decided to postpone and have the debate.
“This time around we felt we need to encourage the younger ones and open their eyes to understand what gender equality is all about and why we need to bridge the gender gap.”
The winner of the debate and other participating schools were presented with certificates and a token in appreciation of their efforts.
